St. Mary’s Varsity Basketball Team Victorious at Christmas Showcase

Taking on two of the toughest New York teams, the Gaels of the Varsity Boy’s Basketball team dunked a resounding victory this past weekend in the Bishop Kearney Christmas Showcase, a regional competition in Rochester, NY. The team was featured in several articles, notably here, here, and here. Photo highlights from the game can be viewed here on smugmug.

On Saturday, St. Mary’s took on University Prep, winning 80-60. The Gaels maintained a solid lead the entire game. Junior guard Sal Saputo scored 17 points, and junior forward scored 23, the last 10 of which were all in the fourth quarter. Nicholas Cham, Josh Milton, Kawar Singh, Kyle Jackson, Alex Longworth, and Matthew Neree also scored. University Prep head coach Desmond Stewart said he wanted to “give credit” to St. Mary’s, who “did a great job.”

On Sunday, fresh off their strong start against UPrep, St. Mary’s took on Bishop Kearney, a team known for being a challenging opponent. Undaunted, the boys solidly won the game 70-64. Four of our players scored in the double digits: Junior forward Kyle Jackson was named MVP for his impressive scoring, Junior guard Sal Saputo led with 16 points, senior guard Jon Mayers scored 14, including four three-pointers, and Junior forward Jovayne Walters scored 13. Other scoring Gaels included Nicholas Cham, Josh Minton, Kawar Singh, and Alex Longworth.

The boys were featured in three articles about the tournament, including one on the front page of longislandbasketball.com. The article highlights Kawar Singh as Saturday’s “Player of the Game” for his 15 rebounds and 5 blocks, and Kyle Jackson for earning Sunday’s MVP title.

St. Mary’s JV Boys Basketball Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Joe Martino called the weekend “productive” and said he is “very proud of our St. Mary’s guys.” The entire St. Mary’s community echoes his sentiments. We wish the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team a wonderful season and offer them congratulations on such a fantastic weekend.
