St. Mary’s Grad to Represent Team USA Hockey

If the historic Winter Olympics isn’t enough reason for Americans to celebrate spirited competition of athletes from around the globe gathering this month in Korea representing their countries, St. Mary’s High School gets to take the celebration to a whole other level. With bragging rights to the Class of 2003 alum, Matt Gilroy who will lace up his skates for Team USA proudly representing this great nation, St. Mary’s stands proudly in support of Gilroy. A North Bellmore native, this former St. Mary’s hockey team 2003 MVP and 2009 Hobey Baker Award recipient will be entering the rink donning the red, white and blue for what the former NHL star sees a chance of a lifetime by representing the United States in the Olympics. Gilroy was recently quoted on the Yahoo Sports site saying, “If we can put our stamp on the Games as a team and come away with a medal, that would be pretty special for all of us.”

People all across New York, and especially here on Long Island have much to celebrate with Gilroy’s dream come true. St. Mary’s High School will proudly host an event at the school for current Hockey Team members, students, faculty and administration to cheer on #97 and the US Hockey Team during the first game scheduled for February 14, 2018.  It is guaranteed that the St. Mary’s spirit will be felt across campus as community excitement is already building in anticipation of the game that will not only be part of our country’s history but will carry forward in St. Mary’s storied athletic program for years to come.

In 2011, Matt Gilroy came back to St. Mary’s for a visit with his alma mater. He met with students, former teachers, and of course Br. Kenneth Robert, FMS who served as athletic director during Gilroy’s high school career. Brother was able to furnish several pieces of hockey history including photos to Gilroy that day. Matt’s #97 jersey from Boston University hangs proudly in the Br. Kenneth Gymnasium in Marist Hall.

The entire St. Mary’s family extends best wishes and congratulations to Matt and the Gilroy Family.

GO TEAM USA!
