The L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Extracurricular & Academic Development) Program
9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Monday – Thursday
June 26 – July 20
Saint Mary’s provides an opportunity for academic enrichment, leadership development, and recreational activities for the young men & women of Queens & Long Island. This 4 week program is geared towards rising 8th graders, and runs Monday – Thursday. In the tradition of the Marist Brothers & Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary we look to educate students with a passion for learning and a desire to grow as leaders among their peers. Acceptance to this program is on a limited basis and geared towards students who look to grow in leadership and scholastic achievement.
Admission to the L.E.A.D. Program requires the completion of an application accompanied by the students’ most recent report card, and one teacher recommendation form The Deadline for applications is May 13, and acceptances will be mailed the following week.
Registration & Fee
Students are notified of their acceptance to the program by the end of May. In keeping with our goal to educate all children, the program is kept at only $400. This will include the cost of field trips, a t-shirt, and any supporting materials.
Course of Study
The program will focus on strengthening the students’ Mathematics, Reading, and English language arts skills. Students will apply the skills acquired in their coursework through the integration of technology and hands-on learning. Students will see the logical reasoning required to a move robot, or explore how to create their own iPad app. There will be a component of the program that looks to develop the individual’s leadership skills as well. Beyond these core course, elective course are offered around the interest of our teachers. They could be anything from art to robotics, again dependent upon the instructor.
Throughout the summer there will be a number of field trips. On the day of a field trip the campers will wear their St. Mary’s Camp shirts, and generally will run the same length of time as a regular day. A trip to the New York Hall of Science may help a child learn about physics, while a visit to the Queens Museum of Moving Images lets students explore the art of film making and its history.
Leadership Seminar & Retreat
There will be weekly leadership seminars and students will participate in an extended day retreat toward the end of the program. The faculty and administration of the program will serve as guides for the young men & women on this day of spiritual & leadership development. The students will take part in a array of team building activities and look to grow in their own self confidence and faith.
The students will attend class in the mornings and then have an afternoon of recreation. Saint Mary’s has 3 full size gymnasiums as well as a Lacrosse/Soccer Field. There will be plenty of space and time for your child to get outside and enjoy some healthy competition. We have also contracted with the town of Manhasset and swimming will be available this year!
Due to the nature of the Program, students are expected to be present everyday. If a student is absent two or more days he or she may be removed from the Program. In the case of an absence the School must be notified at 516.627.2711, ext. 1129 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
